2015 Arrive-and-Race Series Championship WINNERS!

We would like to announce our Top 8 finishers in the 2015 Arrive-and-Race Championship Series!

1st Place 2015 ARRIVE-AND-RACE CHAMPION:  Bobby Bloom

BOBBY BLOOM bLOOM

Bobby Bloom came into the series at Race #2 and became an instant contender for the championship.  Bloom is a fierce competitor on track and when the helmet comes off the guy is as nice as they get.  Bloom is relocating from Colorado Springs and we wish him all the best of luck in his new digs.  He will certainly continue to keep racing in his life and we are stoked to have such a cool guy taking the inaugural Apex Speed Kart Racing School Arrive-and-Race Championship win!  Congrats Bobby!

2nd Place Randy Hopper

RANDY HOPPER hopper 2

Randy Hopper was nick-named “The Dominator” as he was taking wins and podiums left and right in the series. Randy without a doubt had the biggest entourage of fans and side-line support at the races this year. His family is a wonderful group of people and his dad Chuck can lay down some rubber on a SuperMoto Bike, no wonder this kid knows what he is doing. Congrats on a super close championship battle and P2 in the series Randy!

3rd Place Jake Yuenger

JAKE YUENGER yuenger 2

Jake Yuenger was one of the first people to express a huge amount of support towards the Arrive-and-Race Series before the racing kicked off this year. Jake is truly a stand up guy with a great appreciation for karting and love for his family.  Jake worked hard all year to grow as a driver, to become faster and more competitive.  Congratulations Jake on finishing P3 in the series!

4th Place Kanoa Milam

Kanoa 1 kanoa 2

Kanoa Milam was usually first to be at the track in morning on race day, often taking a track walk with his dad Gary to study the curves and learn the racing line.  It was obvious from the start of the year that Kanoa would be a serious contender and someone that would grow as a driver because of his focused determination. Congratulations on taking P4 in the championship Kanoa!

5th Place Jeremy Mayer

jeremy 1 jeremy 2

Jeremy Mayer made huge improvements as a driver throughout the racing season and found himself often running up front in the B Group Main events.   Jeremy exhibits true sportsman-like behavior on and off track. Jeremy and his dad Andy are great supporters of the racing series and we look forward to seeing them in the near future for more karting!  Congrats Jeremy for taking P5 in the championship!

Honorable Mention (top 8):

6th Place Justin Thornton

7th Place Jennifer Kource

8th Place Gillian Myers

We will host a BBQ on November 7th, 2015 for all participants of the 2015 Arrive-and-Race Series at SBR Motorsports Park!  The celebration will begin at 12pm with food, Bocce Ball, discounted kart rentals and a lot of fun for all.  All drivers that participated in the racing series are welcome to invite any family and friends, just let us know your party head count by a week prior to the event so that we are ready to go.  Trophies will be awarded to the Top 8 drivers in the championship.  See you all then!

Arrive-and-Race #5 Season Finale!

The last race of the 2015 Arrive and Race Series took place on October 10th, 2015.  This day was the determinant of the final championship standings for the race series.  Drivers showed up in the morning with their game faces on.. Participants were arriving early enough to walk to the course and get a feel for the configuration that would be raced on for the first time ever.  We ran the full track at SBR Motorsports Park in the counter-clockwise direction with a massive tire slalom down the front straight.  Near the end of the straightaway there was a tire stack in the center of the track forcing drivers to make a choice to go right or left.  On the entry to the fast banked corner after the tire slalom, tire stacks were placed in a position that had drivers shooting down the center of the track near top speed with only about 2 kart-widths of room.  We knew this day was going to be interesting to say the least….

The day got started somewhat as usual with Bobby Bloom and Randy Hopper, our main contenders for the overall championship, setting the top lap times in practice only a few tenths of a second apart. Bobby Bloom went on to qualify 1st place with a blazing lap time of a 55.238!  P2 would be Hopper with a 56.271, and P3 Jake Yuenger with a 56.485.  Justin Thornton and Gillian Myers qualified P4 and P5 making up the A Group Heat Race.  The B Group Heat were drivers Jeremy Mayer on Pole Position, Brooks Myers P2, Kanoa Milam P3, Carl Lyman P4, and Jennifer Kource P5.

Kanoa Milam won the B Group Heat Race and would advance to the A Main.  Bobby Bloom took the win for the A Group Heat Race, Jake Yuenger 2nd, and Randy Hopper 3rd. The A Group Heat Race was full of action as we saw Yuenger get by Hopper for P2 and Bobby Bloom with a big spin into the hairpin but was able to maintain the lead regardless of the loss of control as he had a big lead at the time.  Hopper set the fastest time of the day in the A Heat with a time of 55.162!!

The B Main was won once again by Justin Thornton. New driver to the series Carl Lyman took P2, Brooks Myers P3, Jeremy Mayer P4, and Jennifer Kource P5.

The A Main was a sight to see… The drivers battled hard throughout the entirety of the event.  Front runners Bloom and Hopper ran nose-to-tail for the majority of the race. Hopper attempted a few passes but Bloom’s race craft experience prevailed as he ran high lines around Hopper and maintained his lead position across the finish line many laps despite Hopper’s well executed pass attempts.  The battle between Hopper and Bloom allowed an on-fire Yuenger to catch the leaders and make it a 3-pack battle for the win.  Yuenger was running lap times on par with Bloom and Hopper and got by Hopper for P2!  The crowd grew anxious with gasps and cheering coming from the fence line as these three drivers were within less than a few tenths of a second on track speeding through the tire slalom on the front straight.  With only 2 laps to go these three top karts headed into the banked corner at full speed and Yuenger with a killer run on Bloom landed the nose of his kart into the back end of the race leader sending Bloom well off line and sliding up the track.  Yuenger went by the sideways Bloom with Hopper close behind.  Yuenger and Hopper would cross the finish line on the checkered flag P1 and P2 with Kanoa Milam P3, Bloom P4 and Myers P5.

As the drivers entered the pits after the checkered flag, everyone knew that a decision by the race director was coming one way or another due to the contact between Yuenger and Bloom as the Arrive and Race Series does not allow contact to pass.  The final results were restructured giving Randy Hopper the win, Bobby Bloom P2, Kanoa Milam P3, Jake Yuenger P4, and Gillian Myers P5.  The decision was a difficult one to say the least as the points championship was on the line, however an avenue to go down appeared clear after discussing the situation with the drivers and corner worker who witnessed the incident occur.

With Hopper taking the win, Bloom in P2 and given the results from the prior events in the day we had solidified the championship and Bobby Bloom would take the overall win of the Apex Speed Kart Racing School 2015 Arrive-and-Race Championship!

From SBR Motorsports Park and Apex Speed Kart Racing School we cannot express enough gratitude and appreciation to our drivers in the series this year.  Starting this from the ground up was difficult and uncertain to say the least but seeing 18 drivers involved in the championship this year speaks for itself regarding the success that we have had. We could not have had a better group of people racing this year.. Open communication, transparency, and sportsman-like conduct was displayed by the drivers and staff at every race throughout the year.  We appreciate everyone’s participation and support for the 2015 Arrive-and-Race Series.  We greatly look forward to 2016 and growing this program into something spectacular at SBR Motorsports Park. Thank you all for being a part of  this!

The Arrive-and-Race Series BBQ and Awards Ceremony will be on November 7th, 2015 beginning at noon 12pm. We will provide the food, awards, Bocce Ball, and discounted kart rentals for the afternoon.  All drivers that participated in the series are welcome to bring out family and friends to the event and we can’t wait to have a good time together and express our appreciation to you all.

Thank you so much from Apex Speed Kart Racing School and SBR Motorsports Park!  See you on the 7th!

Review of Arrive and Race Round #4 9/5/15

The fourth round of the Apex Speed Kart Racing School’s Arrive-and-Race Series at SBR Motorsports Park was held on September 5th,  2015.  The race was held on a slightly new configuration to the drivers in the series.  We ran the shortest track that is optional at SBR which makes for a very technical section of track linking turn two into turn four and the S-section at the north side of the track.  The drivers adapted quickly and were running lap times in the high 36 second to 37 second range.  We were glad to have new drivers to the series Bryce Myers, Brooks Myers, and Justin Pennella join us for Round #4!

Qualifying was tight as usual with Bobby Bloom making pole position with a fast time of a 36.765 and close behind him in P2 was Randy Hopper running a 36.932, the only two drivers to qualify in the 36 second range.  The B Group drivers (qualifiers 6th – 10th) were all within only 3 tenths of a second!  Unfortunately right after Qualifying driver Jeff Bork who qualified on Pole Position for the B Group Heat (6th place overall) was feeling ill and retired from the event. The B Heat Race was particularly fun to watch as there were some position changes in the race.  New driver to the series Justin Pennella took the win of the B Group Heat Race and advanced onto the A Main.  The A Heat Race finished in qualifying order with Bobby Bloom taking the win.

The Main Events showed some good action on track!  The B Main was won by returning driver Justin Thornton however that win was not easily achievable as Jeremy Mayer gave Justin a serious run for his money..  In fact, Jeremy had passed Justin for the lead and pointed Justin back by for the position due to kart-to-kart contact. Jeremy Mayer making the decision to give the spot back after some pod to pod action was a very sportsman-like thing to do for his competitor Thornton.  After review from our volunteer corner worker Gary Milam and interviewing both drivers it appeared that the contact was perhaps more incidental than anything.  Regardless of what happened there, great job to the drivers for respecting each other on and off the race track.

The A Main was a hard fought battle for P3 between Gillian Myers and Kanoa Milam.  Gillian ended up coming out ahead with a daring pass into the fastest corner on the track, Turn 1.  Gillian was happy to bring home a podium spot on her birthday!  The top 2 drivers Randy Hopper and Bobby Bloom ran single file from flag to flag and Randy Hopper took the A Main win.

The event was thought to be a crucial time in the points championship between the current points leaders Randy Hopper and Bobby Bloom.  The Arrive-and-Race Championship Points system allows for a dropped race (the lowest point value scored in a single race-day will be dropped from the overall count for each driver).  In the end of the day drivers meeting on Saturday Bloom was quite certain that Hopper’s win was one of the last nails in Bloom’s championship-hopes coffin.  The drivers I am sure will be surprised to see what the points look like with the drop accounted for(see points below).. Our current points leader is in fact Bobby Bloom.  There are only 6 points separating the two top drivers in the series. Bloom’s immaculate performance in Race #3 was what set him ahead of Hopper scoring a perfect 217 points (the most possible in a race day with all 1st place finishes in qualifying, A Heat and A Main).   There are only 7 points between drivers in P3 and P4, Yuenger and Milam, another couple of drivers to be watching next month.

Race #5 of the Arrive-and-Race Championship Series on October 10th, 2015 using the full-track configuration will be a nail-biter for many of us!! With such a small amount of points between some of the drivers, the pressure will be on to perform in every point-earning event throughout the entire day!

Arrive and Race Series Round #3 Review!

The third race of the 2015 Arrive-and-Race Championship Series was held at SBR Motorsports Park on August 8th, 2015 and we had a full house of drivers show up to compete.  For the first time we ran the full track configuration in clockwise direction and used a chicane built with tires on the front straight to slow the karts down on the long section of straight track.  This chicane really changed the mentality of the drivers on track as there were penalties assessed for knocking the tires out of their marked places.  If a driver were to move a tire out of the chalk marks around it on the ground that driver was given a .5 second penalty on their overall race time.

In order to get through the tire chicane as fast as possible it was absolutely necessary to get as close to the tires as you can, cutting the straightest line for maximum speed.  This made for a tricky situation for many of our drivers because the kart’s rear end is wider than the front.  If a driver were to barely miss a tire at the apex of a corner with the front end of the kart, it becomes very easy to accidentally hit the tire with the rear end.  We had a lot of tires hit in qualifying where the lap simply would not be counted.  In the heat races and main events we enforced the .5 second penalty per tire contacted through the race.

A Group being the most consistent and quick drivers, the tires did not seem to interfere much with the results.  Some tires were knocked however the penalties assessed were not severe enough to effect finishing orders for the heat or main.  B Group was somewhat of a different story with a good amount of tires being knocked around.  In the actual finishing order of the B Group Main Event the top 2 drivers (1st Christopher Williams and 2nd Jeremy Mayer) were the only people to not be shuffled around due to tire contact penalties.  New driver to the series Gillian Myers was the only driver in the B Group Main to not hit tires which bumped her up to finishing 3rd place!  Jennifer Kource was bumped back to 4th and Jeff Bork who crossed the line in 3rd place was bumped all the way to the back (Jeff was bowling out there, just joking Jeff you did a great job fighting for your positions and driving hard!).

The most exciting part of the 3rd Round of the Series was the battle between Jake Yuenger and Daniel Smith for 3rd place in the A Group Main event.  These two drivers were battling lap after lap after lap and swapped positions many times through the course of the race.  KUDOS to Jake and Daniel for a clean and aggressive race for the podium position!!  The race up front was not as exciting because our leaders Bobby Bloom and Randy Hopper were spread out a bit during the majority of the races.  A special mention of Bobby Blooms unrelenting consistency and speed throughout the day taking 1st place in all on-track events; practice, qualifying, heat and main.

Congratulations to our top 3 drivers from Round #3: 1st Place Bobby Bloom, 2nd Place Randy Hopper, 3rd Place Daniel Smith.  We have updated the points and things are really starting to get stirred up!  We are excited to see how the remainder of the season is going to unfold and who will be winning the inaugural Apex Speed Kart Racing School Arrive-and-Race Championship Series!

Thanks to all of our participants and spectators for making our events so enjoyable and entertaining!

Cadet Intro to Kart Racing 8/1/15

Saturday August 1st we had another Cadet Intro to Kart Racing program with drivers Oliver and Fedilu.  These young guys wheeled the cadet sprint karts around the full track at SBR Motorsports Park and had a great time.  Both drivers dropped their lap times every session making improvements all the way through the program. Thanks for coming out Oliver and Fedilu to Apex Speed Kart Racing School.  These drivers are now eligible to come back for more seat time in lapping sessions and level two programs with Apex Speed Kart Racing School.

Our cadet racing karts can achieve a faster lap time than the adult rental karts hitting a top speed of 50 miles per hour with an experienced driver behind the wheel.  We offer half day and full day programs for drivers typically starting as young as 8 years old.  If your child is interested in kart racing, we are the number one destination for kart racing in Colorado Springs and safety is our top priority.  We deliver professional driving instruction and even get out onto the track with the drivers.

2015 Arrive-and-Race Series Round #2 on July 11th, 2015

Hello Drivers, We had an amazing race day for the second round of the 2015 Arrive-and-Race Series! Practice and qualifying went off without a hitch and lap times were very, very tight in the group. Next there was definitely some exciting action on track in the B Heat with a few spins and minor kart to kart contact. New driver to the series Justin Thornton took the win to advance to the A Main. In the A Heat things kept mostly single file for the duration of the race and new comer to our series (definitely not new to the steering wheel though) Bobby Bloom took the win. The main events were action packed.. John Tompkins, another new driver with us, started on pole position. Returning driver Jennifer Kource had a great start driving into the lead by Turn 2. Jennifer ended up falling back and Kanoa Milam was able to drive from last to the first place spot by the checkered flag! Kanoa made the most passes in the main events for the day. In the A Main we had Bobby Bloom again taking the Pole Position starting spot and boy-oh-boy did we get to watch a good race. Defending A Main winner from June and points leader Randy Hopper was on Bobby’s tail for many laps. Randy threw in a perfectly-timed pass into turn 3 for the lead and was able to hold off Bloom to the checkered flag. Randy has officially earned the nick-name “The Dominator”. We shall see if he can keep up his winning streak in round 3 of the series. Thanks again to all of the drivers for coming out and giving it your all at SBR Motorsports Park with Apex Speed Kart Racing School. You guys rocked it!!! Congrats to our top three in the A Main: 1st Randy Hopper, 2nd Bobby Bloom, and 3rd Jake Yuenger. Also congrats to the top three in the B Main: 1st Kanoa Milam, 2nd Daniel Smith, and 3rd John Tompkins.

ROUND #3 of the Arrive-and-Race Series will be on August 8th, 2015. Our online calendar is updated. The drivers who have competed in all rounds so far (Randy, Jake, Jennifer, and Kanoa) have first-rights for seats in the event. Looks like we will have another kart built up and ready to run in round #3 so we will be able to up the total head count and run groups of 5 karts on track!!

Special Note: We are very happy to have so much interest in the series from the drivers and spectators. Beginning in Round #3 and throughout the remainder of the racing season, SBR Motorsports Park will be signing in all spectators that come to watch the racing action on a waiver in order for a release of liability. There is a small fee that will be collected by SBR Motorsports Park at the track upon signing in for all spectators. This fee is $2 per person. This simply covers the cost of the insurance being utilized by the track itself. Thank you for your understanding. This fee does not apply to the drivers in the event, only spectators (of all ages).

Thanks again to everyone for participating in the 2015 Arrive-and-Race Series!! A special thanks to John Tompkins for piloting the drone and taking footage of the race track. We are ever grateful to have the beautiful images and video that you were able to capture!

Intro to Kart Racing full-day program 7/9/15

July 9th, 2015 marked our first full-day Intro to Kart Racing program for adults in the World Formula and 125cc 2-cycle Sprint Karts.  The weather turned out to be perfect for the day of karting.  We were worried about rain but it stayed beautiful as could be out at SBR Motorsports Park all day long.  Drivers Mike, Donny, Chris and Jeff came out for a great day of driving and instruction.  The guys took very well to getting on the track in the World Formula karts to begin with and got up to speed quickly.  The drivers got a ton of open track time to refine their driving lines, pedal work, and consistency on track.  By the end of the day these guys were moving around the road course all setting times within just a few seconds of each other.  The 2-cycle TaG Sprint Karts on soft Mojo racing tires really do give quite the workout when being driven at speed.  The karts and the drivers held up great and we are looking forward to the next one.  Thanks to Mike, Jeff, Donny and Chris for coming out to Apex Speed Kart racing School at SBR Motorsports Park!

2015 Arrive-and-Race Series Round #1

On June 13th, 2015 we hosted the first race of the season in the Arrive-and-Race Championship.  The day started off at 9am where Chief Instructor Jared Thompson gave the drivers meeting to the competitors in the classroom at SBR Motorsports Park.  The drivers were split into two run groups on track and started with practice sessions. After practice the drivers returned to the classroom for individual feedback from their instructor in order to find better times on the track.  After practice came qualifying where all competitors would drive as quickly as possible around the karting circuit in order to place themselves into the respective heat races, A and B group.  Our pole sitter for the A Heat ended up being Kanoa Milam, one of the younger drivers in the competition.

Next up came the B Heat race where Jake Yuenger would start on Pole Position.  The B Heat was a great battle to watch between Jake Yuenger and Zach Bork.  Zach ended up driving from last place all the way up to the front and taking the win in the B Heat which advanced him onto the A Main.  Next up was the A Heat where we had a repeating trend of the driver starting in last place Randy Hopper driving all the way up to the front and taking the win!

In the main events we got to see some real racing action where the leaders in the B Main duked it out for the the top spots.  A great battle between Jake Yuenger and Jeremy Mayer ensued and Jake came out with the win in the the B Main.  In the A Main we got to watch a rumble between young-gun Randy Hopper and “Swedish Max” Max Wannelius.  Randy Hopper ended up taking the checkered flag in P-1 at the end of the main event to win the first round of the Arrive-and-Race championship series with Apex Speed Kart Racing School at SBR Motorsports Park.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the race and looking forward to seeing you all in July for Round #2!

Cadet Intro to Kart Racing Course with Madalyn Wilson

We had the first Cadet Intro to Kart Racing Course of the summer on June 11th, 2015 with driver Madalyn Wilson. She did a great job taking to instruction, dropping her lap times, keeping the kart under control and on the track for the entire course.  We are looking forward to seeing her back at SBR Motorsports Park in the future for more training!  Thanks for being an awesome student Madalyn, you did a great job out there!  She definitely earned some ice cream with her parents after the day of driving!

Cadet kid karting with Payton Johnson near Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak at SBR

We have been working hard to get more and more karts up and running for our upcoming driving school and kart racing programs.  Yesterday on June 4th, 2015 this young-gun Payton Johnson came out to the track to drive the Cadet Kart.  Payton was really moving around the kart track, having to use the brakes aggressively to slow down for upcoming hair-pin corners.  SBR Motorsports Park is such a technical track, it really is a driver’s track.. We have off-camber corners, blind corners, full throttle sweepers and hair-pin turns.

We are the only karting center go kart track near Pikes Peak, just east of Colorado Springs in Calhan Colorado.  All of our programs run out of SBR Motorsports Park and we offer kart racing, karting programs, racing schools, and an arrive-and-race series for teens and adults.  Get in touch with us today to learn more about our pro driving instruction and go kart racing courses.

Apex Speed Karting Clinic for CJKC June 27th, 2015.

Apex Speed Kart Racing School will hold a driving clinic to prep racers for the upcoming race day at SBR Motorsports Park with the CJKC. This is a clinic for any drivers in their own karts. The clinic will utilize an indoor classroom with a track map, professional driving instruction delivered by Jared Thompson, and instructor / student lead-follow driving sessions.  This will be a great event to participate in especially for drivers with less experience and is open to drivers of all ages, kids and adults.

The classroom and track lessons will include kart driving techniques and vehicle balance, driving line, passing scenarios, race-craft decision making and anticipation, race starts, and other general driving tips and procedures. The price per driver is only $40. This fee is separate from the Test and Tune fee for SBR Motorsports Park.

The Karting Clinic will be held on Saturday June 27th, 2015. The Karting Clinic will begin at 10:30 am.

Apex Speed Kart Racing School at SBR Motorsports Park

15.4.15 rotax from behindBeginning June of 2015 Apex Speed Kart Racing School will be hosting kart racing school programs, driving clinics, arrive-and-race events, and more at SBR Motorsports Park.  Apex Speed Kart Racing School is owned and operated by professional instructor and driver Jared Thompson.  The school’s programs and events will provide drivers with quality driving instruction and utilizes an indoor classroom, a 1/2 mile outdoor paved karting road course, and multiple types of karts for drivers of all experience levels beginning at just 8 years old.

Apex Speed Kart Racing School is the closest kart track and kart racing school to Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, Monument, the Air Force Academy, Woodland Park and the greater Colorado Springs area.  We are here to help grow the karting community in Colorado Springs by offering courses for beginner drivers up through experienced racers. We have high hopes of starting up a club series at SBR Motorsports Park in 2016 for drivers with their own karts as well, along with growing our arrive-and-race series.  The likeliest options for a local club series would be running kids and adult classes with the Briggs and Stratton LO 206, Rotax, and potentially other karting categories.
